This is a snap shot of where 27.5 metre lengths of rail line are welded together. Once they are welded into what are commonly called strings, they are checked for quality and then loaded onto a rail train allowing them to be transported around Australia. The operators need to position the rail accurately so they can be loaded onto the rail train. Because these long rail strings can weigh over 10 Tonne, the operator previously had to guess when the rail was in position. When the operator got it wrong, another person nearly 100 metres away guided the operator by a series of hand signals. Now a set of lights that operate without cables back to the operator tell him when the rail is positioned within 500mm. If you wish to see more click here. |
