This gives you an idea of the welded rail line length.

Between the two blue arrows is a welded “rail string” that can be 165 metres and about 10 tonne at this welding site. (These rails shown are shorter) Although they cannot be produced at this site welded strings of OVER 600 metres have been produced. These 600 metre long welded strings were laid on the Darwin line.

The welded rail line string is picked up by 11 cranes from the conveyor then stacked on the “rail train”. Because the fixed gantry cranes cannot be moved  the rail MUST be positioned correctly.

When the rail is being carried along the conveyor it is traveling at a fast walking pace when the conveyor is turned off the rail will continue to move because of the weight. It may run on as much as 4 metres.

This makes it difficult to judge where the rail will stop and had forced the people loading the train to use hand signals back to the conveyor operator.

Now with our wireless system the operator knows within 500mm that the rail is positioned correctly.

Having removed the need for hand signals, those previously involved are now doing other tasks safely.
